This specimen was difficult to identify, as shells with this ornament are very rare locally. For a while mourlonia was considered. I finally got to have it examined in person, and paleontologist T. Yancey suggested Naticopsis. The prosocline collaboral ornament that is visible on the subsuture area is a direct match for several specimens visible in research papers. These include papers from Yochelson, Sturgeon, Hoare and Knight. The genus has several subgenera declared, but we do not currently record these. The specimen is tightly locked in hard limestone matrix, and any future attempt to expose more of the shell would likely damage it. The spire was broken on discovery, but I still have it attached to a much larger piece of limestone relative to itself.
