Catalog Number: CG-0002
Meekospira peracuta shown here is a high-spired snail found next to a concretion in shale. The large outer rim of the concretion is shown to the left. The tip of the snail was more prominent when first pulled out, and attempted removal of the clay on the shale made me lose it.
This genus and species has been known since 1860, when it was first described by F. B. Meek and A. H. Worthen. The description came from a journal article describing Carboniferous fossils from Illinois and other western states.
The species is known from 326 to 303 million years ago. The genus is known longer, from 388 to 252 million years ago.
