Subclass Amphigastropoda Simroth, 1906
Order Bellerophontida McCoy, 1852
Superfamily Bellerophontoidea McCoy, 1852
Family Bellerophontidae McCoy, 1852
Genus Patellilabia Knight 1945
Only one example of this member of the Bellerophontidae McCoy 1852 is presented here, from the Brush Creek limestone at SL 6522 (Parks Township). The shells have particular ornament and shapes. Often, the fossilized shell remains behind on the rock during recovery. However, a small piece of the spiral decoration and the shell shape is visible on the specimen.
Several of my collected Bellerophontid-form steinkerns likely belong to Patellilabia. Still, experts have declared that it is impossible to identify any genus in the family simply by using a steinkern.
Knight (1945) erected this new genus to reclassify the Bellerophontacea while studying specimens at the U.S. National Museum.
