This is a short post to report specimens of Schistoceras from the Portersville Limestone in nearby West Virginia. The 1997 volume Pennsylvanian Cephalopods of Ohio reported only 21 total nautiloid cephalopod specimens from the Portersville Limestone in their study area and no specimens of Schistoceras. There were 276 ammonoids in total in the Ohio collections, mostly due to poor collecting opportunities.
They are rare indeed; I’ve seen four collected from the Portersville Limestone in a year, and all four were members of the Schistoceratidae. Mapes et al. (1997) report Goniolobeceras sp., Kargalites sp., and Neoaganides grahamensis from the limestone. Miller and Unklesbay (1942) reported Schistoceras hildrethi from the Woods Run Limestone in Western Pennsylvania and four specimens in the entire Carnegie collections.
